What are Facebook reactions, and can you hide them?

Over the years Facebook has introduced many prominent features to enhance the user-experience, and help users interact with content posted on the platform. One such feature is the ability to react on posts, using Facebook reactions. These reactions add value to the original “Like” button, allowing you to express emotions more clearly.

While this is exciting for many users, others prefer the simplicity of the like-button.

In this CommentGuard article, we’ll discuss, what are Facebook reactions, and can you hide them.

What are Facebook reactions?

Consider Facebook reactions as basic human reactions to specific situations except using emoji like icons. Compared to the original “Like” button, these reactions offer a more practical way to interact with content on the platform.

Say someone has posted an image of their dog who met with an accident. Where you could only like that post previously, now you can react to it with a sad reaction to express your feelings more appropriately.

Types of Facebook reactions

With the intent of enriching the way users interact with content, Facebook reactions help you react relevantly to the context of a post. There are six reactions you can pick from, each representing a unique meaning.

Like : 👍

The “Like” reaction draws inspiration from the classic “Like” button. It’s a simple way to show appreciation to a post on the platform. For instance, if your friend has posted a pic from his vacation, you can use the “Like” reaction to convey, you enjoyed their post.

Love : ❤️

The “Love” reaction conveys strong affection. Say, someone has posted a photo of their engagement you can use the love-reaction to show you are happy and excited for them.

HaHa : 😂

The “Haha” reaction is for posts you find humorous, amusing or extremely funny. For instance, if someone has shared a funny meme, which you can relate to, you can use the “Haha”  reaction to show that the post made you laugh.

Sad : 😢

The “Sad” reaction conveys sympathy or empathy toward a sad post. If one of your friends shares news of a personal loss, you can use the “Sad” reaction to express your condolences.

Wow : 😮

The “Wow” reaction is used to react to something surprising, or impressive. Say, your friend has shared a post on her recent underwater diving adventure, you can use the “Wow” reaction to express your amazement.

Angry : 😡

The “Angry” reaction conveys frustration, disapproval or simply anger. If someone has shared a controversial opinion or promoted hatred, you can express displeasure with the “Angry” reaction.

These reactions are a great way to react specifically to the context of a post, enhancing a deeper level of engagement.

How do reactions differ from Emojis?

Facebook reactions draw inspiration from emojis and at first glance, seem similar. But they serve a distinct purpose owing to their use and integration which makes them different from emojis.

Integration

You can use the Facebook reactions to react on a post or comments on the Facebook platform only. But emojis are universal symbols available and used on many online and social media platforms, including email, messaging apps and more.

Range of emotions

Facebook reactions offer a limited set of predefined reactions. This means you might have to use a specific reaction in many contexts. But there are hundreds of emojis you can pick from, offering flexibility to express yourself depending on a situation.

Customization

Facebook doesn’t allow you to customize the reactions. This means you have to pick from the six reactions defined by Facebook. While you can’t customize the emojis, you have a plethora of options, allowing you to find the perfect expression for an emotion.

Can you hide Facebook reactions on your posts?

Facebook reactions help you meaningfully interact and express your emotion on posts on the platform. But for some users, it can become a bit too much. Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t offer a built-in feature to hide or disable reactions.

But you can employ a few strategies to limit the visibility of your posts.

Change your audience

When sharing a post on the platform, Facebook gives you the option to pick your audience’s visibility. This means you can restrict the visibility of your post to a specific group of individuals, limiting the number of reactions you’ll receive.

Adjust post visibility

By tweaking your “Privacy Settings” on the platform you can adjust the visibility on your post, resulting in limited views. You can set your post visibility to “Only Me” or a specific list of friends. But this doesn’t entirely hide the reactions.

How to hide the number of reactions on your posts?

While you can’t entirely hide the reactions received on your posts, Facebook allows you to hide the number of reactions on your posts.

Let’s discuss how you can achieve this on a computer browser, iPhone, and Android phone.
